Nashville’s War on Talent: Engaging and Retaining Employees in a Candidate Driven Market

It is no secret that the current hiring market favors the employee. Candidates are harder to find not because of a lack of skill or training, but rather because of an extremely competitive market. Then once we hire the right candidate do we have the right resources in place to retain them. We refer to this competitive market as the “War on Talent”. There are solutions and practices that HR executives can put in place to help reduce turnover, retain top talent, and be more successful in finding that talent. You may ask yourself:

  • What do candidates really care about?
  • How should I communicate with candidates during and after the hiring process?
  • What can I do after I’ve hired a new employee to keep them?
  • How frequently do employees adjust voluntary withholdings (401k, HSA, 529 plans, etc.)?
  • How should I review participant-level readiness?
  • Should we conduct a survey focused on financial stress?

We’ll cover the answers to these questions and have an open dialogue about the best practices we see with our top performing HR teams.

Parking information/directions:
Free parking is available in the parking lot directly across from Waggoner Library which is located at the intersection of Lester Avenue and Woodard Street.  Quick Lecture Hall is located on the ground floor. 


Brett Johnson has been active in the Human Capital Management field for 5 years. In that time, he has worked with over 150 organizations in the small, mid, and now major market to address these HCM needs. Brett is passionate about solving real business issues and helping his clients navigate the complicate world of employee engagement and HR.

Jay Hollis specializes in designing and implementing customized retirement plan solutions for business owners and executives. Through a collaborative and personalized process, Jay develops solutions that meet the needs and goals of both business owners and their employees.

Jay joined the Taylor Wealth Solutions team in April 2011 and is responsible for developing new business partnerships among small and mid-size businesses. His passion is implementing the specific plan that best suits each business' needs and helps employees effectively utilize their plan to achieve their retirement goals.

Jay believes that no one should have to rely solely on Social Security in their retirement years. Through education and encouragement, he helps people plan confidently for retirement.
