Designing Meaningful Interactions in eLearning

Let's face it, elearning has a bad reputation. And often deservedly so. Much of the elearning we've experienced is little more than online presentations of information. We click through a slide deck, listening to a narrator read the on-screen text to us word-for-word. We may encounter a knowledge check here and there, a click and reveal interaction to break up the bullet points, and then a multiple choice test at the end. Sure, not all elearning is "bad," but a lot of it is.

Now, what if I told you it doesn't have to be this way? That elearning can be engaging, meaningful, relevant, impactful, LIFE CHANGING. Okay, maybe not life-changing, but BEHAVIOR changing. Behavior change - it's the holy grail of training, right?

In this session, I'll introduce you to some strategies for designing meaningful elearning interactions for your learners to engage with and learn from. Interactions that focus on what people need to do on the job, not just what they should know. I'll also show you a variety of example interactions that we'll dissect and discuss. 

Learning objectives:

  1. Compare and contrast the current state of elearning with the “dream state.”
  2. Explore action mapping as a strategy for designing meaningful interactions.
  3. Differentiate helpful and harmful feedback statements in learning interactions.
  4. Examine a variety of example interactions.

Biography: Jeanne holds both a bachelor's and master's degree in education and has over 25 years of experience in education and training, 18 of them in elearning design. She has designed learning experiences for people in a variety of industries, including higher education, technology, healthcare, and even animal genetics. Jeanne's elearning designs have touched thousands of learners around the globe. She is a member of the eLearning Guild and the Association for Talent Development and is active in the ATD Nashville Chapter where she served on the 2017 board and as a founder of the Instructional Design/eLearning SIG and Articulate Storyline User Group. Jeanne, a native of Ohio, has lived in Nashville for ten years. She enjoys kayaking, reading, arts & crafts, and agility training with her two dogs.
