Leading Virtual Teams: How to Manage a Workforce You Cannot See
Presented by Lisa Gamble, SVP, Global Delivery Operations Lee Hecht Harrison

Global Workplace Analytics' research finds that 50% of the US workforce holds a job that is compatible with at least partial telework and 20-25% of the workforce teleworks with some frequency. According to FlexJobs, over 270 companies in the US have gone 100% remote, up from 26 in 2014. These cohorts of 'invisible workers' will continue to rise. And often rising with it is anxiety around leading teams that you rarely see and that may be located in countries far away.

According to a recent survey by AMA, 63.5% of respondents stated that managing virtual teams is a critical competency, yet only 36% believed their managers have mastered it.  And while there may be a recognition of the clear benefits of this arrangement for both parties, a frequent theme often emerges from leaders...'How do I know they're working?'

To remain competitive, companies must be able to sustain high productivity and engagement from their remote workforce.  This demands that leaders learn to recognize and successfully navigate the unique challenges associated with leading in a virtual environment.  During this session we'll discuss these challenges and practical strategies for building trust, establishing and maintaining productive relationships, and ensuring effective communication and accountability.  We'll also discuss common business communication missteps and how to mitigate risk when managing a globally dispersed team.
