Employer’s Playbook for Managing the Opioid Crisis-Epidemic
Presented by
Dinamarie Fonzone, MBA, Ma.Ed, MCHES, VP, Health and Risk Management, Scott Insurance; David L. Johnson, Attorney, Butler Snow

Opioid addiction is now at epidemic proportion in the United States. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that in 2012 there were an estimated 2.1 million people in the US addicted to Opioid drugs with the problem continuing to grow.

As this problem increases, employers are struggling to manage rising risk and costs associated with addiction in the workplace. Studies show that addicted employees use more insurance benefits than the rest of the workforce and are also more likely to be involved in a worker’s compensation injury. Balance that against HIPAA and recent privacy protections surrounding drug testing by the DOL, managing addiction can be tough to navigate. At the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Clearly define the scope of the opioid addiction
  • Explain how the epidemic impacts business costs in both health insurance and workers compensation coverage.
  • Know how to build and administer a drug testing policy that will comply with HIPAA, ADA and DOL guidance.
  • Understand what questions they can ask a candidate or employee without violating government regulations.
