FLSA: Navigating the Fair Labor Standards Act
Presented by
Kim Cox, Director, Compensation and Benefits Vanderbilt University Medical Center

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) establishes minimum wage, overtime pay, and recordkeeping, affecting full-time and part-time workers. The Wage and Hour Division of the Department of Labor (DOL) administers and enforces the FLSA.

Items of discussion include the following:

  • Basic Wage Standards
  • Minimum Wage
  • Exempt vs Non-exempt
  • Duties Testing
  • Recordkeeping
  • Final Rule – December 1, 2016
  • Change in White House Administration

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the purpose of the FLSA, and why it was implemented in 1938,
  • Knowledge of minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping, and minor employment,
  • Ability to determine if a position is exempt vs non-exempt status through testing,
  • Understand enforcement if an employer does not follow the FLSA,
  • Understand the final rule of December 1, 2016
  • Be informed of proposed regulations under the new white house administration

Biography: Ms. Cox works at Vanderbilt University Medical Center as the Director of Compensation & Benefits bringing 20 years-experience in healthcare Compensation and Benefits. Prior to joining VUMC, Ms. Cox worked at Roper St. Francis Healthcare, an affiliate of Carolinas Healthcare, as the Director of Compensation, Benefits & HRIS and Self Regional Healthcare as the Compensation & Benefits Manager.

In recent years, Ms. Cox was a presenter on a national webinar for The Studer Group, “LEM: Journey to Accountability,” as well as presenting on three webinars for the South Carolina Hospital Association, “Obtaining Gold Star: Smoking Cessation” and “Tobacco Cessation Facilities”. 

Ms. Cox believes an employee’s livelihood and work-life balance has a direct impact on providing excellent patient care. When employees are concerned about pay and benefits, they are not able to focus on taking care of patients so partnering with leadership to promote innovative and robust programs to enhance employee total reward programs is critical to employee success.

Ms. Cox holds a BS in Business Administration from Lander University, a MA in Human Resource Development from Clemson University and certifications in Six Sigma Green Belt and SHRM-SCP. Ms. Cox is a long standing member of the Society of Human Resource Management and World at Work.
