Bullying and Harassment in the Modern Workplace: The Developing Intersection Between Employment Law and Employee Behavior

Bullying has been increasingly commonplace and is no longer reserved for the playground. As an HR professional, what do you do when bullying happens in the workplace?

This highly interactive session is designed to equip you to judge and teach appropriate workplace behavior and to take proactive steps to avoid both unnecessary workplace disruptions and legal claims.

We will examine and answer the following questions:

  • What does bullying really mean?
  • How are harassme nt and bullying the same and different?
  • When does bullying become illegal harassment?
  • How should your organization respond to incidents of bullying and harassment? 
  • What steps can your organization take to protect against legal claims for bullying and harassment?

Learning Objectives Include:

  • Ability to define bullying versus harassment
  • Ability to train others regarding appropriate versus inappropriate behavior
  • Develop a strategic approach for dealing with bullying in the workplace
  • Develop a plan to protect the organization from the legal implications of bullying in the workplace

Parking information/directions:
Free parking is available in the parking lot directly across from Waggoner Library which is located at the intersection of Lester Avenue and Woodard Street.  Quick Lecture Hall is located on the ground floor. 

Biography: Eric is a shareholder with Littler Mendelson specializing in healthcare, discrimination and harassment, whistleblowing and retaliation, wage and hour, government contractors. He has over 30 years’ experience guiding employers through various employee management situations that could potentially place them at risk.

Eric has been named The Best Lawyers in America, Labor and Employment, 2007-2016 among numerous other honors. He is frequently called upon to give presentations to the Middle Tennessee Society of Human Resource Managers and other associations throughout Tennessee and Georgia (where he is also licensed). He has written for a variety of publications, including the Tennessean newspaper on topics regarding legal implications of everything from mishandled FMLA to the employment of ex-convicts.
